Loyalty for a fuel station network: what is different

Published: April 8, 20266 min read3 views

In a fuel network, loyalty runs into three constraints a small café never has: traffic, time at the till, and product groups with wildly different margins.

Speed is the hard requirement

At peak hours you cannot add even five seconds at the till. In practice, identification must be a single action: scan the customer's code from a phone or a physical card, done. Any sign-up form at the register is out — that belongs on a QR stand or on the receipt.

Fuel and shop need separate rules

Fuel margin is thin; coffee and snacks are not. One earn rate for both either costs too much or motivates nobody. The fix is a different earn rate per product group, with rewards pointed at the shop assortment where margin allows a more generous offer.

The classic combination: earn on everything, redeem on coffee, car wash and snacks. Customers get tangible value; the network gives away what costs least.

The staff tool must work without new hardware

Rolling out a new terminal at every till is slow and expensive. The cheaper path is a staff app in the browser on the existing till computer, or on a phone. That lets you launch network-wide in days and do the till integration in a second phase, with data already in hand.

Integration: what to ask your POS vendor

  • Can the POS call an external API during a sale?
  • Can the receipt carry a loyalty code and point balance?
  • What happens on refunds and voids — are points reversed?
  • Does it work offline, and what happens when connectivity returns?

The last one matters most: a station keeps trading when the internet is down, so offline behaviour must be defined up front.

Measure the network, not one station

Three cuts are most useful at network level: member share per station, average shop basket with and without the program, and 30-day return rate. Differences between stations usually reveal staff behaviour rather than market differences — where employees ask, sign-ups are several times higher.

Data and law

Fuel programs collect frequency and location data, so consent management, export and deletion need to be in place from the start. More on that in GDPR and loyalty data.

For large networks Loyalty.lt offers an Enterprise plan with custom limits. Standard plans are on the pricing page.
