Kiosk mode and the PIN

Locking the device to the app, why Device Owner matters and how to exit.

Kiosk mode and the PIN

Kiosk mode locks the device to the staff app, so a customer or a passer-by cannot get into other apps or settings.

Turning it on

Go to Settings → Kiosk mode and switch it on. The first time, the app asks you to create a PIN and repeat it. The PIN is what unlocks the mode, so only a manager or shift lead should know it.

Device Owner

The screen shows whether the app is the Device Owner. Full locking only works then — otherwise Android still exposes some system buttons. Device Owner is set while provisioning the device, so ask for it when a new tablet is prepared.

Exiting

Switch the mode off in the same place by entering the PIN. Change the PIN with "Change PIN".

If the PIN is forgotten

The PIN is stored on the device, so we cannot recover it. The app's data has to be reset on the device instead — talk to your manager.
